The volume in memoriam of the distinguished Bulgarian specialist in Ottoman studies late Prof. Dr Elena Grozdanova, DSc. (1941-2011) is the result of the efforts of 19 historians and philologists alike who represent leading scientific centres and tertiary education institutions in Bulgaria and abroad. Papers and articles included in the volume refer to multifaceted issues belonging to the areas of socioeconomic, demographic, political, religious and cultural history of the Balkans and Southeastern Europe, including the Bulgarian lands during the period XV-XIX c.; numerous studies tackling topics dealt with even by Prof. Grozdanova herself. The common denominator of the materials contained in the volume is the authors’ striving to bring into scientific use and to interpret new, novel or less known and less utilized sources– predominantly but not exclusively Ottoman archive documents; thereby they pay their respect for Elena Grozdanova as a historian and source researcher. Besides aforementioned studies the volume contains several texts originating from the personal archive of Prof. Grozdanova, as well as a detailed bibliography of her oeuvre.

The historical demography of the Bulgarian communities in Macedonia and Ukraine (ends of XIX c. – to the middles of XX c.): a statistic analysis

The project follows the guidelines of the Contest “Young scholars 2011“, part of Scientific Research Fund with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science

Duration: 2011, ongoing

In charge: Asst. Prof. Dr. Stanislava Stoycheva

Participants: Asst. Prof. Dr. Inna Manasieva (IHS – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences), senior expert Dr. D. Martinovski (State Agency for Bulgarians abroad), Dr. М. Vâlkov (Museum of Military History)

The project examines number, demographic indicators, traits and processes among Bulgarian communities in two different ethnocultural environments, namely the historical and geographical regions of Macedonia and Ukraine from the end of XIX c. to the middles of XX c. The project is based upon unknown archive documents, as well as on reconsidering some already published and known ones, analysed through sophisticated interdisciplinary statistical (quantative) and historical methodology. A paramount goal for researchers is to form a database mostly of archive origin (coming out from Bulgarian, Ukrainian and other foreign archive depositories), thereby suitable and well-defined statistical samples will be secured that will enable subsequent scientific analysis and synthesis. This way it will be allowed sustainable development for further research on the project topics for a longer timespan. Obtained scientific results during the first phase of the project confirmed that: the workgroup’s members have delivered scholarly presentations in front of several international scientific conferences, national conferences, and academic lectures abroad etc.
