В периода 23–27 юни 2026 г. в Икономически университет – Варна се проведе XΧVI Международен симпозиум по предосманистични и османстични изследвания (CIEPO 26). Форумът беше организиран по инициатива на Института за исторически изследвания – Българска академия на науките, в партньорство със Софийския университет „Св. Климент Охридски“ и домакините от Икономически университет – Варна.
Форумът събра във Варна над 200 изследователи и специалисти от Европа, Азия и Северна Америка, превръщайки града в международен център на академичния диалог върху историята на Османската империя, Балканите и Черноморския регион. Високият научен интерес към форума беше потвърден от над 350 постъпили заявки за участие, селектирани чрез двойно анонимно рецензиране.
Научната програма обхвана широк кръг от теми: война, търговия и дипломация, демография и миграции, религиозни контакти, управление и право, медицина, инфраструктури, архивни източници, културни идентичности, регионални и трансрегионални мрежи, както и приложението на дигиталната хуманитаристика и изкуствения интелект в османистиката.
По време на симпозиума беше представена изложбата „Варна през Османския период“. В изложбата бе поставен акцент върху Варна като черноморско пристанище, стратегически град и място на многообразни обществени, религиозни и културни контакти. Наред с изложбата, в дните на симпозиума имаше изложение на книги, издадени от български и международни издателства, включително и от Академично издателство „Марин Дринов“.
Съпътстващата програма включваше още обиколка на историческите квартали на Варна; представяне на книги, дискусия за ролята на изкуствения интелект в османистиката; лекция относно българските архиви и възможностите, които предоставят те за османистичните изследвания; премиерна прожекция на документалния филм „С гриф „поверително““, посветен на османската архивна колекция в Националната библиотека.
В последния ден, 27 юни, участниците се включиха в научно-културна екскурзия и посетиха исторически забележителности в Североизточна България.
Организирането и провеждането на международния симпозиум във Варна от страна на Института за исторически изследвания – БАН и неговите партньори е значимо признание за мястото на българската историческа наука в международните предосманистични и османистични изследвания и важна стъпка към още по-активното утвърждаване на България и Българската академия на науките в световния научен обмен.

The 26th International Symposium (CIEPO 26) of the Committee of Pre-Ottoman and Ottoman Studies (CIEPO) took place from 23 to 27 June 2026 at the University of Economics – Varna. The event was organised by the Institute for Historical Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in partnership with Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’ and the hosting institution, the University of Economics – Varna.
The symposium brought together over 200 researchers from Europe, Asia, and North America, transforming the city of Varna into an international hub for academic dialogue on the history of the Ottoman Empire, the Balkans, and the Black Sea region. The high level of scholarly interest in CIEPO 26 was evident from the fact that more than 350 applications were received. The selection was made through a double-blind peer review process.
The academic programme covered a wide range of topics, including war, trade and diplomacy, demography and migration, religious contacts, governance and law, medicine, infrastructure, the study of archival sources, cultural identities, regional and transregional networks, and the application of digital humanities and artificial intelligence in Ottoman studies.
During the 26 CIEPO symposium, the exhibition ‘Varna during the Ottoman Period’ was presented. This exhibition highlighted the city’s role as a Black Sea port and its position at the heart of diverse social, religious and cultural encounters. Alongside the exhibition, the symposium featured a display of books published by Bulgarian and international publishers, including the Marin Drinov Academic Publishing House.
The accompanying programme also included a tour of Varna’s historic neighbourhoods; a book presentation; a discussion on the role of artificial intelligence in Ottoman studies; a lecture on Bulgarian archives and the opportunities they offer for Ottoman studies; and the premiere screening of the documentary film ‘CLASSIFIED’ dedicated to the Ottoman archival collection at the “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” National Library.
